This semester I was in a class called Writing 116, in this class I was part of a group with two other students called House Stark. House Stark has decided to use technology as our main topic. We chose this as our topic because so many people use technology every day for many different reasons. We chose to take this topic and break off of it into three smaller topics. For the three smaller topics we decided to focus on Smart Phones, Social Media, and The Effects on Communication. We have decided to aim our topic and pieces toward High School Students. As a college student that uses a form of technology everyday this will help me talk about my subtopic better.
The subtopic that I chose to write about was social media and its many uses and how it effects the people that use it. The reason that I chose this specific subtopic is because I am partial to using at least one social media a day to connect with friends and family that live farther away. The reason for exploring social media as a subtopic of technology is because social medias are part of the reason technology has grown as much as it has today. Because of the growth of technology more and more social medias have made and are becoming more diverse. With the diversity of social media arising many of them are beginning to have different uses.
1) Conner, Oliver. "Why do People Use Social Media." Onepoll. The Pulse, 5 July 2013. Web. 27 Mar. 2014. <http://www.onepoll.com/10-reasons-people-use-social-media/>.
In Conner’s Onepoll he talks about why different people used different social medias. It also described some research that was conducted and it described and explored the different reasons on why people continue to come back social media sites. This author also believes that if you use these ideas of why people come back to social medias you can make any project successful.
This piece was pretty effective in getting its point across. It was effective because it was short, concise, and sweet. Conner gave a short introduction and then immediately got to the point of why people continue to come back to social media sites.
This piece will be helpful in my paper because it helps give a better idea to people that create social media sites on why people want to continue using specific sites. This piece is also helpful to people that may use social medias to promote their product, this can be helpful to them because it gives them a better idea of what kind of people are “addicted” to using social medias.
This piece has a lot of potential use for the reader of this paper as well because they can go to this site and learn about why people are addicted to social media. If they are one of those people that are “addicted” they can learn about how they can possible stop by figuring out what habits they have that make them addicted.
2) Curtis, Anthony. "The Brief History of Social Media." The Brief History of Social Media. University of North Carolina at Pembroke, n.d. Web. 27 Mar. 2014. <http://www2.uncp.edu/home/acurtis/NewMedia/SocialMedia/SocialMediaHistory.html>.
“The Brief History of Social Media” was written by Anthony Curtis and gives the reader an idea of the time scale of how social media was created and where it all began. This piece begins with when the internet was first created and finishes in 2013 with current projects and social media sites that are being used today. This site also gives the numbers of members for each site as it progresses through the years.
This piece is effective in giving people a timeline and history of the internet and social media. This piece was effective in giving the reader a history of things because it gave lots of details in the history of different sites being formed and it also included the member numbers or percent growth of each site each year after its first initial year. Curtis’ piece was also effective in saying why each piece was effective as well as a brief description of each site as it was introduced into the timeline.
This piece was helpful in writing my paper because it helps give a better idea of when each site was created and how quickly it grew or became popular. It will also aid in determining where social media will go in the future and how quickly some sites might grow in the future as social media sites develop.
This piece has a lot of potential use for readers of this paper as well because they can go and learn about the history of the internet and of social medias. This website will also help readers understand why social medias were created and how quickly they can grow. This website can give readers a timeline of when everything was created.
3) "How Social Media Changed the Way We Interact with the World” - The E-Guillotine." How Social Media Changed the Way We Interact with the World - The E-Guillotine. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 Mar. 2014. <http://www.e-guillotine.com/how-social-media-changed-the-way-we-interact-with-the-world.php>.
E-Guillotine published this article to inform people that social media has changed how we interact with each other. This article goes on to talk about how social media can either be viewed as a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you talk to. It goes on that one of the issues with social media is that we talk to a large number of people on these sites. With this being true it gives people a chance to share opinions with a large range of people. Because of this people can get into “sticky” situations with what could be called “friends” on these social media sites.
This piece is not very effective in getting its point across because the article is so short. With the article being short it is hard for the author to go into great detail about how social media has changed how we interact. It does give some smaller facts but does not have the length to go into full and better detail of the effects of social media on people’s communication.
For my paper this piece will be helpful in explaining why and how social media has hindered our abilities to communicate with people in person. It will also help in explaining another reason why people used social medias and why they have become so popular for to use as a way of communication to those that are farther away.
A reader may find this article helpful in why some people do not like social media sites. They may also look into this piece if they want to know more about why other people love social media sites in the way of communicating with others.
4) Mauri, Maurizio, et al. "Why Is Facebook So Successful? Psychophysiological Measures Describe A Core Flow State While Using Facebook." Cyberpsychology, Behavior & Social Networking 14.12 (2011): 723-731. Business Source Premier. Web. 15 Apr. 2014.
In this article about a particular social media site called Facebook and why people find it so addicting. This piece describes a study that was done to determine the positive and negative effects of using different social medias. The research was conducted for this project because only a few studies have been done to try and identify what makes social media so successful. It goes on to describe the experiment done and the results of their findings. They found that the Facebook experience had very different results than that of the stress and relaxation experiences. This concluded that Facebook can evoke psychophysiological state characterized by positive valence and high arousals.
This piece is effective in giving people an idea of why they become addicted to social media sites similar to that of Facebook. It gives clear and concise details of the entire experiment, including the reason for starting the research, the process during the research, and of the results after the experiment.
This piece will be helpful in writing my paper because it will help me give a better description of why people continue to use social medias. It will also help in giving my paper some ethos and it will be used to determine one of the main reasons people use social media and how they use it.
This piece could be useful to readers if they would like to look further into the process of this experiment and why it was originally conducted. It would also be helpful for a reader to look at because it gives a short background on why social media is so popular and why people like using it so much.
5) "Social Media Is Part of Today’s Workplace but Its Use May Raise Employment Discrimination Concerns." U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. N.p., 12 Mar. 2014. Web. 30 Mar. 2014. <http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/newsroom/release/3-12-14.cfm>.
This article was from a press release on March 12, 2014. In this press release the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) talks about how social media is being used in the work place can go on to b both good and bad things. The EEOC goes on to explain that when companies are using social media to find potential employees that later on down the road it could lead to workplace harassment and it could fall on the shoulders of the employer. It also states many good things about using a social media to hire employees which include searching for specific qualifications.
This piece was effective in giving people reasons as to why social media is being used in the workforce and how this can either hurt or help people in finding jobs. This press release goes into great detail about how using social media can harm a person later on in working for a company that used social media to hire them. Because of this detail it makes the piece seem more effective in getting its point across that using social media makes for un-equal employment opportunities and can also lead to harassment later in the workforce.
This piece will be helpful in writing my paper because it will help give a better understanding of some of the reasons on why people use social medias. This press release will aid in explaining why social media is not always a good thing. It will also aid in paper with how people can use social media in the workforce but can later lead to issues in the work area.
This press release could be useful to readers if they want to look further into how people are discriminated in the workplace. It would aid the reader in how social media is used in the workforce and why certain employees do use social media over other sites for finding employees. Readers may also want to look at this piece to get a better understanding of issues with using social media to locate a job.
6) "Social Media." MBAUNC. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Mar. 2014. <http://onlinemba.unc.edu/research-and-insights/the-recruiting-revolution-how-technology-is-transforming-talent-acquisition/social-media/>.
This article was about the major players in social media set out my Kenan-Flagler Business School. This article gives highlights of some of the major players in social media and describes how people use them to expand their talent lines and finally how job seekers use them to search for jobs. The list of social media sites that this article included were: Linkedin, YouTube, twitter, BranchOut, BeKnown, and Google+. These sites were all used because employers use them to help find potential employees. This article says that social media has been helping expand talent pools and also helping hire employees. This article also lists the pros and cons of using social media for finding potential employees. It finishes off by going over which social media site would be the right one for locating a job.
This article was not very effective in getting a point across because it did not give a lot of detail in each description and did not do an effective job in giving an accurate job on why people use that specific social media over another. Instead of giving specific reasons for each site this website gave the same reason for all social media sites and just changed the wording and ways of saying the same thing. It also did not effectively give reasons as to the pros and cons of social media process. Their section on which application is the right one did not state as to why you would use a specific social media but rather just stated which social media site was the most popular one for businesses to use for hiring potential candidates.
This article will not be very useful by itself in my paper but combined with other sources this article can be of use. This article by itself is not useful for my paper because some of the information is repeated in some other articles. This article can be useful in my paper in the fact that some of the information is repeated. Because some of this information is repeated it helps give credibility to my sources that are already being sited. This piece will also be helpful in explaining things that are not very clear in other sources.
This article can be useful to readers to help further educate themselves in the major players of social media and why social medias are used. This article can also help a reader determine which social media is most used for doing what to help in employees find jobs through social media sites. It will also help readers determine if a social media is the right way to put themselves on the job market.
7) "Social Networking Fact Sheet." Pew Research Centers Internet American Life Project RSS. Pew Research Center, 2014. Web. 28 Mar. 2014. <http://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheets/social-networking-fact-sheet/>.
This article by Pew Research was published on their website for viewers to see the results of their research that they conducted on social media. They start by stating that that although the research was initially conducted in November of 2010 that as more research is found and made available that the page will be updated. The site then goes on to show tables of online adult’s usage of social media and a breakdown of the information that Pew Research collected. Pew Research then discusses how social media usage has jumped among young adults and teens over the past few years. The article then goes on to about how cell phones may add to the rise of social media usage by both adults and teenagers. Adult usage of social media is brought back up to determine and categorize what Pew Research calls “Power Users.” This article concludes with how social media is now being used for political parties to promote their potential candidates.
This article is effective because it gives the data in a clear and concise format that makes it easy for the reader to read and understand. With how the data is presented to the audience it makes it easy for the reader to understand and interpret the data in their own way. This data is also effective because it gives the reader a way to see who uses social medias and why they use them. This article is also very effective because of the way that it is written. This article is written for a younger audience, this can be found by looking at the way the writers write to the audience.
This article will be useful in my paper because it gives valuable information on what kind of people use social media. This can be helpful in my paper because it will help give a better idea of why people use social media and why they choose specific social medias over others. This can also help because it is updated as soon as new results come in that may lead to better detail, this helps give a better idea of who is using social medias on a regular basis and how they are using these social medias and for what purposes.
This article could be helpful for a reader to look at to get a better detail on specific data that appears in the article. It will also be helpful for a reader to read because the reader can read about the specific reasons on why people may use certain social medias. With this information in the reader’s hands they can draw their own conclusions on why a certain media is used and who might use that social media.
8) Times, Epoch. "The Top 10 Countries That Use Social Media." The Top 10 Countries That Use Social Media. Epoch Times, 13 Apr. 2013. Web. 29 Mar. 2014. <http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/4352-the-top-10-countries-that-use-social-media/>.
The article written by Epoch Times was written to determine which country uses the most social media. This article talks about how some countries use social media to help raise awareness of uprisings going on at that time. People in different countries may also use social medias to raise awareness of a social issue or a human rights issue. People in countries that use social media for these reasons may be doing so in order to get people from other countries to notice and become involved in the rising issues.
This article is effective in a few items but mostly this paper is not effective at all. The parts of this paper that are effective is the list of Top 10 countries that used social media. The other piece of information that was effective was the first paragraph giving a small snippet on what some people in different countries may use social media for. The rest of this paper is in-effective because it does not give a clear view on why these 10 countries are at the top of the list.
“The Top 10 Countries That Use Social Media,” will be helpful in writing my paper because it offers details that will help broaden and narrow down my sub-topic and bring my paper to a close. This article can do that because it has a list of the top countries that use social media drawing to an end of who uses social media and why they use it. Seeing as this article also talks about how some countries use social medias this will also help end this topic.
The article will not be very helpful to readers to read because there is not a lot of depth to this article. It also won’t be helpful to readers because it gives a brief synapsis on how other countries use social media an then gives the list of countries.
9) "Using the Power of Social Media." Guardian Liberty Voice. Guardian Liberty Voice, 27 Mar. 2014. Web. 29 Mar. 2014. <http://guardianlv.com/2014/03/using-the-power-of-social-media/>.
The article “Using the Power of Social Media” talks about how social media use can change from country to country. It also talks about how internet usage has grown since it started in 1985. Because of social media the way people interact has changed sometimes for good or bad but it has also helped family and friends reunite. This article talks about how social media can be bad for people but it can also be a good for society as a whole.
This paper is semi-efficient in the fact that it is more opinionated than it is factual. Although this paper does include facts there are very few and far between. While offering these few facts there is a lot of opinions that are offered. These opinions show some truth and insight into social media and why others may use it depending upon where and how they live.
The article may prove useful to my paper in showing why people from different areas of the world use social media and why certain countries cannot use social medias for any reason. This information can help people that are reading my paper to understand why social media in other countries. The facts that are presented will help build the history of social media and how it has changed over the years.
For the readers this piece may be helpful to read to help get a different opinion in why people use social media in different countries and to get some basic facts about internet and social media and how it has grown over the years. For some readers this may prove useful to read to see some of the positive and negative effects of using social media. Although this article does focus on the positive effects people will still find it useful for negative side effects of social media.
10) "Young People and Social Networking Services." Digizen. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Mar. 2014. <http://www.digizen.org/socialnetworking/sn.aspx>.
This website was designed to show how young people interact with social medias. This website is broken down into different pages under each page it gives a description of how each one may effect young people and why they use social medias. The first page on this website talks about what social medias are and gives definitions of the different types of different social medias and why people will use those social medias. The next page talks about the evaluation of social medias and how people may use them because of how they can be used. The third page goes into detail about the benefits of learning through the use of social media. It also talks about how social media can be used by educators and why they might want to use them to help students excel in class work and classrooms. The fourth page describes some of the risks and issues that educators may run into using social medias in the classroom. This page also tells how to manage the risks of using social medias in the classroom. The final page gives educators ideas and examples in how to use social medias in the classroom and how to make them safe to use in and around the classrooms for all students.
This website is very effective in describing why people may use social medias. The website gives many details into why an educator may use social media in and around the classroom. It also gives insight into some issues that social media can create for educators, this portion was effective because it drew to how social medias can be helpful in the classroom. This website was also effective because it gives many details in how young people are now using social medias.
This website will be useful to my paper because it gives complete insight into how young people use social media. This will help in describing why social media is used by people and the effects of using different social medias. This paper will also be effective because also shows how educators can use social medias to help young people in the classroom.
For readers this website may be useful for students and educators. For students this could be useful so that they can learn how to use social media in the class and to help with class work. For educators this website would be most useful. This is so because it gives much detail of how they can use this to help students with things that they may struggle with, with material that they are more familiar with.

This piece was helpful in writing my paper because it helps give a better idea of when each site was created and how quickly it grew or became popular. It will also aid in determining where social media will go in the future and how quickly some sites might grow in the future as social media sites develop.

E-Guillotine published this article to inform people that social media has changed how we interact with each other. It goes on that one of the issues with social media is that we talk to a large number of people on these sites. This press release goes into great detail about how using social media can harm a person later on in working for a company that used social media to hire them. Because of this detail it makes the piece seem more effective in getting its point across that using social media makes for un-equal employment opportunities and can also lead to harassment later in the workforce.
